Add {{Tlx|Very long|date{{=}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} to the top of the article, below any [[WP:HAT|hatnotes]].

; <code>small</code> parameter
: {{Tlx|Very long|small{{=}}left|date{{=}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} generates the following smaller-sized template, a left-size box instead of a banner (which is usually only of use with {{para|section}}, below): {{Very long|small=left|date={{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}
; Section-specific use
: If just a particular section of an article is getting long, it can be tagged by adding the {{para|section}} parameter, or using the {{tlx|Very long section}} template variant:
: {{Tlx|Very long section}} and {{Tlx|Very long|section|small{{=}}left|date{{=}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} both render: {{Very long section}}
; Readable prose size (in words)
: The readable prose size in words, calculated with the help of tools like [[User:Dr pda/prosesize|Prosesize]] or [[User:Shubinator/DYKcheck|Shubinator's DYK tool]], can be added manually to the template:

; <code>nosplit</code> parameter
: Adding {{para|nosplit|yes}} (or any other value for that parameter, such as <kbd>y</kbd> or <kbd>true</kbd>) will suppress mention of splitting the material to new sub-articles, since not all content is suitable for splitting (usually because it would fail [[WP:Notability]] as a stand-alone article).

; Reason parameter
: Adding {{para|reason|your reason here}} will add a new second sentence to the banner reading:
